2023-24 Upper Deck Series 2 Hockey does exactly what you’d expect — it expands the earlier Series 1. That means more stellar photography, more Young Guns, and additions to several insert sets. However, there are some new additions as well including a game-by-game look back at Connor McDavid’s 2022-23 season.

2023-24 Upper Deck Series 2 Hockey Checklist Overview

At the heart of every flagship Upper Deck Hockey release is its base set. Series 2 adds another 250 cards. Of those, the first 200 are standard veteran cards. They’re complimented by 50 Young Guns, which are historically some of the key Rookie Cards in the entire hobby. Young Guns are short prints, landing six per hobby box. With Upper Deck Hockey’s new condensed configuration in 2023-24, this works out to one every other hobby pack. Yes, Connor Bedard is among them. This represents his flagship Upper Deck Rookie Card.

Inserts

The 2023-24 Upper Deck Series 2 Hockey checklist has a lot of variety when it comes to inserts. Among the returning themes is UD Portraits. These continue to go bold with their approach. It’s not Sears-inspired laser backgrounds this year, but players are portrayed as nobility. You know, in case you want to decorate you mantel or the wall above it. Base versions are 1:7 hobby packs with additional Silver Frame (/99), Red Frame (/25) and Printing Plates (1/1) also available. UD Canvas grows as well, landing 1:4 hobby packs. Additional subsets include Retired (1:96 packs), Program of Excellence (1:96 packs) and Young Guns (1:24 packs). Canvas cards have hobby-exclusive Black and White and Printing Plates parallels.

Inspired by graded cards, Population Count inserts have shifted to acetate stock. Although not serial numbered, print runs are confirmed for individual cards based on their level. These include 1000, 500, 100, 50, 25, 10 and 1. Other sets that started in Series 1 that carry on here include Honor Roll (1:3 packs)n and Dazzlers Blue (1:12 packs). For a tough chase, there’s Day with the Cup (1:2,000 packs). Fluorescence isn’t part of the first set but over the past couple of years it has become a Series 2 staple. Red are the easiest at 1:36 hobby packs. Gold (/150), Blue (/50), Pink (/15) and Green (/5) make up the parallel rainbow. It’s similar with Highlighters Yellow (1:96 packs). Orange (1:288packs), Pink (1:1,536 packs) and Green (1:4,608 packs) add to the set’s brightness.

New Inserts

Fresh additions for Series 2 start with Deep Roots (1:4 packs). The checklist on these is large with 50 cards. Purple parallels are 1:144 packs. Ecliptic (1:6 packs) captures players taking shots with a flashy design. Sparkle (1:30 packs) and Gold Sparkle (1:720 packs) can also be found. A top player from every team plus a few extras get the spotlight in PC’s (1:4 packs). Other inserts include Instinctive (1:4 packs), Director of Boards (1:8 packs), and Glaring (1:67 packs).

Finally, there’s Monster Season (1:15 packs). It’s a big 82 cards and every single one of them has Connor McDavid. The Hart Trophy winner has a different card for every 2022-23 regular season Edmonton Oilers game. Images come from that match-up and there’s a synopsis for each as well.
