If you collected cards from the late ’90s, 2022 SkyBox Metal Universe Spider-Man will have some familiar names. It’s more hobby-centric nostalgia than Marvel but there is some of that, too. This isn’t a strictly retro release, either. Building off the earlier Marvel Metal X-Men release, Upper Deck brings some new elements to the checklist as well.

2022 SkyBox Metal Universe Spider-Man Checklist Overview

The base set has 200 total cards, delving deep into the characters found in the many Spider-Man comics. Of these, 100 are High Series short prints. Designs take from both 1995 Fleer Marvel Metal and Metal Universe sports releases. Gold FX parallels are three per hobby box while Grandiose versions are two per box. Pink, Orange and Turquoise FX parallels are all serial numbered to varying amounts. There are also one-of-one Purple versions. Each card also has 100 total Precious Metal Gems. The first ten numbered copies are Green while the remaining 90 are Red. This mimics the format of the landmark 1997-98 Metal Universe Basketball.

Inserts

2022 SkyBox Marvel Metal Universe Spider-Man has a lot of inserts. Some are relatively easy to find while others are anything but. Palladium are one per hobby box. Not only are they done on acetate, but the cards are die-cut as well. Holographic foil is also worked into the cards. Villains populate the Rogues Gallery checklist. These are done on acrylic stock. Platinum Portrait has a long history with the Metal Universe brand so it shouldn’t come as a surprise that they’re here as well. These are done with a stippled design. Basically, characters’ faces are drawn using dots. SkyBox Z-Force makes the jump from ’90s basketball to the Spiderverse. The brand’s Rave and Super Rave parallels return along with new Amazing Rave and Spectacular Rave versions. Daily Bugle Headlines are booklet-style inserts that open up. Short prints add to the challenge of a set build for these. There’s also Skyscraper Shadowbox cards, providing both layers and depth with its design.

It’s kind of hard to have memorabilia cards for comic characters, but 2022 SkyBox Marvel Metal Universe Spider-Man does have something similar. Amazing Fantasy 15 Comic Cuts has panels taken from a comic that includes Spider-Man’s first appearance. Spider-Man Comic Cuts take a similar approach only with a deeper list of issues to draw from. These also have versions with creator autographs.
