Product Details

2022-23 Upper Deck Series 1 Hockey has some fresh faces and concepts. But for longtime collectors of the flagship line, they’ll likely find some comfort and familiarity in the overall layout and configuration. That includes Young Guns, which are once again one of the product’s anchors.

2022-23 Upper Deck Series 1 Hockey Checklist Overview

At 250 total cards, not much changes about the base set other than the players. It’s been this way for over a decade. Vets takes up the first 200 cards, which includes a pair of checklists. Rookies get the Young Guns treatment. Series 1 has 49 different players plus an additional checklist. Landing 1:4 hobby packs (approximately six per box), they continue with the trend of being moderate short prints — tough but attainable. Highlights on the checklist include Owen Power, the first pick in the 2021 NHL Draft, Marco Rossi and Matt Boldy. French parallels work out to one per hobby box while acetate Clear Cut versions return as a hobby-exclusive. Other parallels include Exclusives (/100) and High Gloss (/10). Base cards have unannounced Gold Foil parallels as well. For these, the Upper Deck logo and the foil in the nameplate are in gold instead of silver. Odds are not known. These are typically parallels found through Upper Deck’s e-Pack platform and may surface there as well.

Inserts

Several inserts make their way onto the Series 1 checklist. UD Canvas is the biggest with 120 total cards, including some additional Young Guns of its own. Like past years, UD Canvas will continue into Series 2. UD Canvas Black and White parallels are another one of the 2022-23 Upper Deck Series 1 Hockey checklist surprises. UD Portraits is back as well, this time with a different design. These combine to land two per hobby box. Numbered Black and White parallels are also available. Honor Roll, which has both Rainbow and Gold Rainbow parallels are approximately two per hobby box. The bold Dazzlers set is back, too, with Blue and Pink versions available in hobby packs. The ever-expanding Clear Cut Honoured Members adds another nine cards to its running multi-year lineup. Other acetate inserts include Clear Cut League Leaders and Clear Cut Foundations. 2022-23 Upper Deck Series 1 Hockey does have some insert set debuts.

Centre of Attention highlights some of the NHL’s best middlemen. Freestyles gets its inspiration from graffiti. Both of these have rare Gold parallels. Population Count draws from graded cards with a dash of Wild Card stripe cards from the early ’90s. Designs look like slabs. The Wild Card angle comes from the seven tiers of print runs available in the set: 1,000, 500, 100, 50, 25, 10 and 1. Among the product’s other inserts are Defensive Mechanisms, Rookie Retrospective and Debut Dates. There are also some extremely tough pulls with Day with the Cup Flashbacks, highlighting past Stanley Cup Champions celebrating like Wayne Gretzky and Teemu Selanne.
