Reviving Upper Deck’s SP Signature Edition brand for another run, 2020-21 SP Signature Edition Legends Hockey features the “largest checklist of retired legends the market has seen in years.” Each Hobby box averages at least two autographs. After a considerable delay, the product finally arrived in March of 2023. The cards are also available on ePack at a later date.

Revisiting many former stars, the 2020-21 SP Signature Edition Legends Hockey checklist contains a 451-card base set. This includes 300 common cards and 50 short prints (SP), falling 1:3 packs. These 350 cards come in Gold Foil base parallels, as well. Select base and base SP players have Gold Spectrum Foil autographs.

The rest of the base set repurposes Upper Deck’s popular Future Watch subset to honor all-time greats (#351-451). Numbered to 199 or less, the Base All-Time Future Watch Autos line has 100 cards split into three different tiers of rarity (#/199 or less). The final card—#451—is the Base All-Time Future Watch Mystery Bonus (#/199) for Gordie Howe.

Behind the Boards (1:60 packs) covers the former players who became coaches and Evolve (1:9 packs) observes three different points in a player’s career (rookie season, middle season and final season, where possible). Offering die-cut designs, Decagons (1:36 packs) showcases top players from past decades and Dominant Digits (1:6 packs) celebrates retired stars and their jersey numbers. Bringing in the popular set from the flagship product, UD Canvas Legends (1:5 packs) honors key names. Life After Hockey (1:30 packs) is yet another choice. Most inserts come in Gold Foil parallels, as well. For Life After Hockey, these are limited to the two-digit or three-digit retirement year of the player in question.

Another appealing aspect of 2020-21 SP Signature Edition Legends Hockey is the on-card autograph content. A blast from the past, ’97 Legends Signatures (1:43 packs) adds new cards in the continuation series (#AL-161 to #AL-260). On top of that, the Century Legends Signatures insert includes single-player (1:100 packs) and multi-signed cards. In addition, many of the inserts are also issued as hard-signed autograph parallels.

Supplying one final chase in 2020-21 SP Signature Edition Legends Hockey is the 48-card Profiles set within the UD Bounty program. The first 24 users on UD Bounty and the first 25 on ePack to complete and redeem the full Profiles set (via scratch-off code) will earn the full Profiles Gold parallel set (49 cards). The 49th card is for Gordie Howe. The second award to these same 49 collectors is a random Profiles Black Auto. Every card is a one-of-one edition and all are hard-signed except for one.
